"Son, Where are you studying?"
"I am in NIT"
"Oh! You mean NIIT!!"
This the most common reaction I get when I mention my college name. Come on guys,at least you can show some respect to the "could have been IITians"!! Don't say NIIT, we are at least better than them (though I would avoid any chance of knowledge duel with them!!) and studying in a national level government college.
With a little more effort, concentration and luck we could have avoided the identity crisis by being an IITian! But we also rubbed our asses hard to get in here and get mentally raped and our asses spanked by the professors, their assisgnments and even the authorities each day probably like an an IITian. Being in NIT at a place like Rourkela also doesn't help because most of the people outside Orissa don't seem to have sufficient geographical knowledge about the town. And so probably they end up thinking
"Poor Kid! Couldn't even get admission in a good city!!"
And some even speak their mind out like one of my relative!!
"Hey where have you taken admission?"
"At NIT Rourkela,Uncle"
"Oh! Where's Rourkela?"
"It's in Orissa"
"Why did you take admission there? You could have gone to Delhi. Or even Bhubaneswar NIIT would have been better if anywherein Orissa!!"
"No.No. You don't understand. It's not NIIT, it's NIT. National Institute of Technology, an engineering college!!"
"Oh! Why didn't you try Bangalore then? I heard everyone can get a seat there. You could have too!!"
And the story becomes more ironical when you know that his son is studying at some engg. college in Siliguri!!
Even a person as knowledgable as a CBSE school principal in a town reacted
"Never heard of it!"
when heard of NITR!!
My cousin had once said to me
"Dude! Why didn't you took admission at J*****guri Engg. College. It's the best in India with a campus of 240 Acres!!"
And my reply was
"I ain't qualified enough to get in here and I am happy to study in smaller campus of just around 1000 Acres!!
My friend once snapped
"ITS NOT NIIT, Its NIT. Haven't you heard IIT and NIT in the same breath EVER??"
Come on guys! We know we are not IITians and we also sometimes feel bad for not being one so but still we are one of the best. We are NITians!!! And I am proud to say that. So next time before poking your nose and commenting on ourselves, please update your knowledge a bit and also learn the difference between one 'I' and two 'I's!!!
P.S.: Dear bloggers, blogger.com has been blocked at NITR because according to the intellectuals in the administration, its a DATING & MATRIMONIAL site!!!
